Role Summary

A Yard Jockey is responsible for ensuring compliance of safety and quality regulations while performing various tasks including moving trailers as directed by management, maneuvering vehicles in tight spaces, lifting and opening trailer doors, and maintaining equipment cleanliness. Effective communication, equipment operation, time management, and the ability to work independently are essential. In addition, they must be open to cross-training opportunities, and maintaining a flexible schedule is essential.

Role Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with all safety and quality guidelines and regulations. 

  • Move empty trailers to shipping doors, set loaded trailers to the doors, and remove loaded/empty trailers from dock doors as directed by Management and/or Yard management system. 

  • Safely maneuver a tractor and trailer combination vehicle in a compact yard area. 

  • Safely enter and exit the yard tractor numerous times per shift. 

  • Safely maneuver equipment with good backing skills. 

  • Transport trailers between two facilities located across the street from one another. 

  • Lift and open trailer doors. 

  • Maintain the tractor in a clean, sanitary condition. 

  • Conduct daily inspection of trailers and keep yard in order during shift. 

  • Maintain trailer inventory and ensure proper trailer seals. 

  • Assist in warehouse responsibilities as needed, including forklift operation. 

  • Perform other tasks within the employee's training and skills as directed by the supervisor and/or department manager. 

  • Effectively communicate with all team members as well as with leads and supervisors of other departments. 

  • Complete assignments in the time allotted. 

  • Fulfill all other duties assigned by Supervisor and/or Manager.

Role Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years or older 

  • High school degree or GED required 

  • Must have a valid Class A, CDL 

  • Must have a current DOT physical 

  • Must have an acceptable driving record 

  • Must have a minimum of 1 year experience in the operation of a tractor-trailer unit in a yard driver setting 

  • Maintain acceptable attendance and must be able to work overtime as required 

Physical Requirements 

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time 

  • Ability to manipulate a keyboard for extended periods of time

  • Climb, balance, kneel, crouch, or crawl

  • Ability to use a computer for extended periods of time 

  • Lift freight and other objects of various shapes, sizes and weights up to 55 pounds

  • Operate warehouse equipment as required for position (i.e. forklift, pallet jack, cherry picker) which requires coordinated movements
